Pharmacy Technician

If you are interested in working as part of a pharmacy team assisting a pharmacist then the Pharmacy Technician Program can provide you with the knowledge and qualifications you need. A Pharmacy Technician helps licensed pharmacists provide medications and other health care products to patients. The certificate program will prepare you to enter the field in a hospital, home infusion or community pharmacy as an ancillary working under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

About the Program

This 60 hour certificate program is offered for a total of 10 weeks, 2 evenings per week. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) examination to receive national certification. 

Program of Study

Course content in the program will include: medical and pharmaceutical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, drug distribution systems, IV admixture procedures, and medication packing techniques, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, aseptic technique and pharmacy law and ethics. Integrated into the program is an opportunity to observe a retail, hospital and nuclear pharmacy environment. A strong background in mathematics is recommended and a math placement test may be required.

Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities for Pharmacy Technician are expected to grow much faster then the average for all occupations through 2014. As the population ages the demand for pharmaceuticals will increase dramatically. This increased demand will spur an increased demand for technicians in all practice settings.
