St. Vincent’s Medical Center, a 473-bed community teaching and referral hospital with a Level II trauma center and a 76-bed inpatient psychiatric facility in Westport, provides a wealth of clinical experience for the student. It also has academic affiliations with two other medical schools — the University of Connecticut and New York Medical College for the training of residents. In addition, the Medical Center is also affiliated with numerous educational institutions throughout Connecticut for educating nurses, pharmacists, social workers, therapists and other healthcare support staff.
Based on their majors, students receive experience in Medical-Surgical, Maternal-Child, Ambulatory, Radiology and Cardiovascular departments. In addition to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, clinical internship and precepted practicum experiences are provided in selected regional hospitals, healthcare agencies, physician’s offices and ambulatory settings.
St. Vincent’s Medical Center has a number of attributes which enhance the clinical experiences for our students. It has achieved Nursing Magnet® Recognition, received an “A” Hospital “Safety Score from Leapfrog Group, has been ranked as the Best Hospital in Fairfield County and in all of Western Connecticut for 2013-2014 by U.S. News & World Report, and most recently is the first and only hospital in Connecticut to become a member of the MD Anderson Cancer NetworkTM, a program of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
